Statement from District 65 Representative Liz Bennett in regards to the Grand Jury process in the Jerime Mitchell case. Rep. Bennett wants to explore legislation that would bring real change to the way these cases are handled. Write to Liz in support of her idea!
“As community leaders, it’s our responsibility to both law enforcement and the public to structure the system of investigation in officer involved shooting cases to be as transparent and unbiased as possible. As the daughter of a retired police officer, I have deep respect for our law enforcement community, and I am disappointed in the process which led to Wednesday’s Grand Jury decision, which was made without a statement from shooting victim, Jerime Mitchell. I believe it’s essential that we develop a better system for investigation in cases like these that builds – not erodes – trust between the public and our law enforcement community. To that end, I am exploring legislation next session which would establish a basic standard for independent prosecutors in cases of officer involved shootings.”
